Shipping by weight

Enabling shipping by weight

Shipping by weight allows you to define shipping fees based on the weight of the products. To use this shipping type, you must assign a weight value to your product when adding or editing a product. Select “Shipping by Weight” from the shipping type drop down box.

Basic shipping by weight settings

Basic shipping by weight settings
  1. Enter a value for “Free Shipping Minimum Order Amount” if you want to offer free shipping only when the purchase amount for a single order reaches or exceeds a certain minimum amount. For example, if you enter 500.00 in this field, free shipping will only be available when a customer’s order value is ₵500.00 or higher. If you want to offer free shipping no matter the weight of the products, enter 0.00 in this field and leave all other fields blank. You may still enter a value for Local Pickup Cost, though.
  2. Check “Enable Local Pickup” if you want to give the option to your customers to pick up the products from your physical store. Make sure to give accurate location information for your store if you enable this option.
  3. Enter a value for “Local Pickup Cost” if for some reason you wish to charge shipping for local pickups, otherwise leave blank.

Country-wide shipping fees

You can define shipping fees for each country you ship to. Configure the “Country and Weight wise Shipping Rate Calculation” section.

  • From the country drop down, choose a country to configure shipping fees for.
Country-wide shipping fees setting

You can define the shipping fees in two ways: Based on rules or Per unit cost.

Define shipping fee per unit cost

This option allows you to define the shipping fee for every 1kg weight of product you ship to any part of the specified country. For example, you enter 2.00 in the “Per unit cost” field and a customer buys two products: Camera = 13kg and camera bag = 3kg, the customer will pay ₵32.00, i.e.

2 x 13kg for camera

+ (2 x 3kg) for camera bag

To configure shipping fee “per unit cost”,

Define shipping fee per unit cost
  1. Choose “Per unit cost” from the “Calculate Cost” drop down.
  2. Enter a value in the “Per unit cost” field.
  3. To create shipping fees “Per unit cost” for another country, click the circled plus icon at the bottom of the “Country and Weight wise Shipping Rate Calculation” box (see the image above)

Define shipping fees “Based on rules”

This option allows you to define shipping fees based on different ranges of weight. The “Weight up to” setting allows you to define shipping fees for weights below and including a specified value. For example, if you enter a value of 50 for weight and a value of 40.00 for cost, the shipping fee “Based on rules” will be ₵40.00 if the weight of a customer’s order is 50kg or less. With this setting, you can define different prices for different weight ranges. For example, If you define three “Weight up to” settings for

  1. Weight up to 5kg, Cost = ₵10.00
  2. Weight up to 10kg, Cost = ₵30.00
  3. Weight up to 20kg, Cost = ₵50.00,

a “Based on rules” shipping fee of
₵10.00 will be assigned to orders 5kg and below
₵30.00 will be assigned to orders above 5kg and up to 10kg

₵50.00 will be assigned to orders above 10kg and up to 20kg.

The “Weight more than” setting allows you to define shipping fees for weights exceeding a specified value. For example, if you enter a value of 50 for weight and a value of 40.00 for cost, the shipping fee “Based on rules” will be ₵40.00 if the weight of a customer’s order is more than 50kg.

You should combine the “Weight up to” and “Weight more than” settings to define a full range of shipping fees to cover all possible weights.

To configure shipping fee “Based on rules”,

Define shipping fees based on rules
  1. Select “Based on rules” from the “Calculate Cost” drop down.
  2. Enter a value for the “Country default cost if no matching rule” field if you wish to define a default shipping fee for that country if the weight of a customer’s order does not fall within any defined range. This will be useful if you did not set up the ranges correctly or if you forgot to assign a weight to the product. This value will be ignored if there are available shipping rules to cover the order weight.
  3. Select “Weight up to” from the “Weight Rule” drop down.
  4. Enter a value for “Weight” that marks the upper limit of the lowest range of weights you wish to define.
  5. Enter a value for “Cost” that marks the lowest shipping cost for “Based on rules”.
  6. Click the circled plus icon inside the “Weight-Cost Rules” box (see arrow 1 in the image below) and repeat steps 3 to 5 for the next range of weights and the corresponding shipping cost.
  7. Repeat steps 3 to 6 until you have defined all weight ranges you think orders will normally fall within.
  8. Now, click the circled plus icon inside the “Weight-Cost Rules” box (see arrow 1 in the image above) again.
Weight-cost rules setting
Weight-cost rules setting
  1. Select “Weight more than” from the “Weight Rule” drop down.
  2. Enter the highest value you enter for “Weight up to”. This caters for any weights outside of the ranges you defined for “Weight up to”.
  3. If you wish to add another country, click the circled plus icon below the “Weight-Cost Rules” box (see arrow 2 in the image above) and repeat steps 1 to 10.

When using the “Based on rules” option, you must define rules for both “Weight up to” and “Weight more than”. Any one left undefined will be considered free shipping.

When all is set up and done, click the “Save” button at the bottom right corner to update your settings (you can click the “Save” button at any point during the setup).

Tips

  1. You should test all settings to make sure they function the way you intended.
  2. When an instruction tells you to leave a field blank, really leave it blank. Do not enter 0 or 0.00 in that field. Use the delete or backspace key to clear out any entry you have made in that field. Note that many fields have a place holder of 0.00. Don’t worry about it if you have cleared out your own entry.
  3. To define free shipping, enter 0.00 in the “Free Shipping Minimum Order Amount” field and clear out all other fields in the specific shipping type’s settings.
